Adinkra symbols are ubiquitous in Ghana and beyond. They are found on company and university logos, seals, coats of arms, statues, furniture, buildings and many more. We present some logos which feature the symbols and comment on their unique meanings in those contexts.

As you browse this list, it will become abundantly clear that universities in Ghana love Adinkra. It is the rare university or institution of higher learning that does not feature Adinkra in its logo. What could be the inspiration for this?

A controversial suggestion is the following: They all learned from the University of Ghana, the first university in the country, established in 1948 and whose current logo was adopted in 1965. The logo of the University of Ghana features two Adinkra symbols–Dwennimmen and Aya–and nothing else but a horizontal gold bar separating the two symbols. That is an enduring tribute to Adinkra and Ghanaian culture that has likely inspired many others to follow suit.

Dwennimmen
Aya
The logo of the University of Ghana features three aya trees (ferns) and two oppossing dwennimmen (ram's horns). The university's interpretation of the Aya and Dwennimmen symbols depart from their standard interpretations. According to the university's brand manual published in 2017, the relevant feature of the three aya (ferns) is the fact that they stand upright. This represents truth and integrity. Additionally, the relevant feature of the ram's horns is that they move or "progress" forward. Thus, putting the two interpretations together gives the university's motto, "Progress with integrity" or "Integri procedamus" in Latin. Had University of Ghana not offered this explanation for their logo, we would have speculated that Aya being a symbol for endurance and hardiness and Dwennimmen being a symbol for strength with humility, their logo was perhaps an admonition to pursue knowledge with courage and tenacity while guarding against the pride of the intellect.

Nyansapo
The logo of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology features a pot with fire burning out of it, calipers, and an eagle standing on a stool, surrounded by green leaves. The Adinkra that is featured in this logo is Nyansapo. It is carved into the middle section of the stool on which the eagle stands, thus reinforcing the school's motto, "Nyansapo wosane no badwemma," to wit, the knot of wisdom is only untied by the wise.
3 Ashesi University logo
Ashesi University
Adinkrahene
Before Ashesi University updated its seal to the current one, the logo on the left was its official seal. It features a dagaz and Adinkrahene on the left and right respectively when one draws an imaginary horizontal median across the seal. Adinkrahene, an Adinkra symbol for leadership and charisma, was an apt inclusion in the seal for Ashesi University, part of whose mission is "to educate a new generation of ethical, entrepreneurial leaders in Africa."
